“Charisma Chronicles” Seminar With Dr. Carol Park

On January 7th, TYP members joined a zoom seminar with speaker Dr. Carol Park, author of Memoirs of a Cashier: Korean Americans, Racism, and Riots and Korean American studies researcher at UC Riverside, hosed by Korean American Young Leaders (KAYL).

Dr. Park shared how trying to understand the Korean American experience and her own identity led her to document the 1992 Koreatown Riots in Los Angeles, a critical moment in Korean American history that was the breaking point of racial tensions that had been building up for decades. She concluded that the conflict and many current instances of rationalization are rooted in lack of crosscultural understanding between different groups. She hopes that her young audience will be aware of that fact and communicate it for a more understanding future.
