On June 17th, TYP members Kate Lee, Claire Lim, Woosung Jung, Caleb Kim, Isabelle Baek, and Diane Baek volunteered at the San Diego Food Bank. Organized by Kate Lee, the event was part of TYP’s efforts to promote community engagement.
The volunteers arrived at the Jacobs and Cushman Food Bank in the morning. Along with several other non-TYP volunteers, they received orientation on their task and safety, and then they sorted fresh apples, oranges, and potatoes from rotten foods and packaged the food into
boxes for distribution. The boxes were then distributed to organizations that serve those in need.
After a full morning hard work and absurd amounts of food (Claire Lim: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many oranges in my life as the amount I saw that day.”), the volunteers received a happy announcement that together they had packaged several hundred pounds of food for their neighbor’s tables.
Kate Lee reflects on her participation with pride: “When I entered the Jacobs and Cushman Food Bank for our volunteer shift, I did not expect to see so many other communities and organizations willing to volunteer. Together, we all began our shift of packaging produce, growing the pile of bundles little by little. And when the two hours were over, it was announced that we had packaged several hundred pounds of produce. The number of people that would feed! I did not expect to take anything significant from packaging produce, but I realized how powerful of an impact cooperation between communities can have. I remember feeling proud leaving the warehouse, smiling because I had just contributed to helping the San Diegan community in some way.”
Claire Lim embodies TYP’s spirit of community service: “I enjoyed my experience volunteering in the San Diego Food Bank because it felt good knowing that what I was doing would help other people. Also, I was able to meet fellow members of TYP and it was fun chatting with them while doing volunteer work!”
Woosung Jung closes our article with lasting memories: “I still think of it sometimes, and I think it was a good experience for me.”
Thank you for your participation and your continued dedication to our community!
