TYP Members Volunteer at Hand in Hand

TYP is proud that three of its members, Kate Lee, Lynn Choi and Joon Choi, are activity leaders in the neurodivergent recreation club Hand in Hand!  Neurodivergent youth of all ages have fun in arts-and-crafts, physical games, and cooking with like-minded peers, creating an understanding social environment that is hard to find elsewhere.  But crucially, there are cross-neurotype interactions too.  Kate Lee, who is neurotypical, had no idea what to expect when she came prepared to lead a paper-airplane activity.  Hand in Hand was able to break that barrier: “Before my participation in Hand in Hand, I was completely unaware of the Korean neurodivergent community here in San Diego… [I] became preoccupied with the idea that the activity we prepared would be too simple or boring. To my delight, the members exhibited a sincere determination to create the best paper airplanes and win the prizes. The groups that I aided would follow my steps with keen interest, and I was moved by the wholesome and supportive interactions between the volunteers and the neurodivergent members.”  Much of the stigma around neurodivergence comes from a lack of understanding and can be overcome by personal interaction.  Therefore, it is very important to learn with and about neurodivergent individuals so that society can be more welcoming to neurominorities.
