On March 19th, TYP sent a third batch of its students complete professional CPR training, another step towards having all TYP members be first-response competent. TYP members Caleb Kim, Haeryn Yu, John Lee, Joon Choi, Luke Menzimer, and Woosung Jung took an online lecture-course in the morning and later met in-person for mannequin practice after lunch. The online portion taught a wide breadth of first-response concepts and techniques in addition to CPR. Then the students were able to perform what they learned on medical-grade mannequins of adult, child, and infant sizes. The training was very practical and taught techniques as useful as humming a 120 bpm song to keep steady rhythm during CPR, downloading an app that is a map of AED locations for quick access, and pointing at bystanders to assign clear roles during a frantic emergency. “The teaching felt really succinct but productive,” as observed by Caleb Kim, who along with his peers learned how to respond to virtually any kind of medical emergency in a single morning. Teaching CPR is for TYP’s mission of empowering the youth to benefit society. Or, as Woosung Jung puts it, “now I think I would be able to prepare for emergency problems and help others now.” And there’s personal development too: Haeryn Yu gained “a new sense of responsibility as I felt like if there was an emergency I could be able to save someone’s life and having the training to say that I can do that is amazing to me.” TYP will continue teaching its students CPR and other valuable life skills in hopes that their benefits can be multiplied.
