CPR Certification Class

TYP Teens Get CPR Training and Certification. First response training can save lives.

On November 20, 2022, TYP board members (president Lynn Choi and vice presidents Gene Chang, Isabelle Baek, and Sophie Park) completed first response training and certification. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a method to keep blood pumping in the body when the heart has stopped. CPR can also be enhanced by a machine called an automated external defibrillator (AED). AEDs supplement CPR by delivering electric shocks to the heart that could get it beating again. Tourniquets are tools that stop potentially fatal blood loss. All three are very useful in emergency situations and can often make the difference between life and death. This possibility of saving a life is why TYP decided to train in first response. The first part of the training was online instruction. The TYP board members learned to identify and respond to various emergency situations such as strokes, trauma, choking, and seizures. Then the class relocated at a training center where mannequins were used to practice CPR in-person. They learned techniques for performing CPR on adults, children, and infants and how to use an AED and tourniquet. Lynn Choi, president of TYP, says that the training exposed her to “a lot of information I learned that I hadn’t known or even considered before”. Gene Chang, vice president of TYP, adds on, “this knowledge isn’t something that’ll fade in relevancy anytime soon”. Sophie Park, vice president of TYP, voices that “someday I could be responsible for someone’s life, a thought that somehow both excites and scares me”. More TYP members will take the same training course in the near future.
